SITE REHABILITATION

Post-capping, a rehabilitation program was initiated which included periodic radiation surveys to ensure that the site was returned to natural background radiation levels for the area. The residues beneath the capping  layer contain Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), in the form of traces of uranium and thorium decay products.

As part of the site rehabilitation, periodic environmental gamma surveys, radon/thoron monitoring and        groundwater sampling has been undertaken in             accordance with the Radiation Management Plan (RMP) for the site.

All monitoring was conducted using calibrated          equipment, following the DMIRS NORM guidelines, by a qualified Radiation Protection Adviser, and in accordance with the commitments made under the RMP. An annual report is provided to the Radiological Council for formal reporting purposes under the WA radiation regulations, and to support environmental reporting to the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.
